Brian DeQuincey Newman established The DeQuincey Newman Law Firm in April 2012. His practice focuses on criminal defense, personal injury, and government relations.

Mr. Newman graduated from Morehouse College, Atlanta, Georgia, cum laude, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration. He later earned his Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law in Columbia.

Prior to establishing The DeQuincey Newman Law Firm, Mr. Newman worked at Rikard & Protopapas LLC focusing on criminal defense, personal injury, business litigation and medical malpractice . He is also a former assistant solicitor for the Fifth Circuit Solicitor’s Office where he prosecuted a variety of criminal cases including, but not limited to fraud, burglary, assault crimes, and murder.

In addition to being an attorney, Mr. Newman is also a dedicated public servant. In a 2010 Special Election, he rose above a field of eight candidates and was chosen as the District II representative on Columbia’s City Council.

The youngest person ever elected to City Council in the City of Columbia, Councilman Newman is part of the new generation of leaders moving forward to bring bold, innovative solutions to new challenges facing our community.

Councilman Newman was successfully re-elected in April, 2012 with 91% of the vote and currently serves on the city’s Public Safety and Arts and Historic Preservation Committees and chairs the city’s Finance, Audit and Budget Committee.

His father, Clifton Newman, has served South Carolina as an At-Large Circuit Court Judge for nearly 10 years. His mother, Patricia Newman, serves her family as a dedicated homemaker and serves her community as an active member of the church named for Brian’s uncle, civil rights leader I. DeQuincey Newman. Brian is a member and attends, along with his parents, I. DeQuincey Newman United Methodist Church in Columbia.
